Anna Cavazzini

MEP and chair of Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection

RULEMAKER No. 5

Don’t let her soft diplomacy and chilled demeanor fool you — Germany’s Anna Cavazzini is a rising star in the Brussels bubble with a solid track record of experience on both sides of the Atlantic.

As chair of the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, she has overseen the adoption of two landmark pieces of legislation in which her committee played a leading role — the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act. The former aims to clean up platforms’ online content; the latter tackles Big Tech’s competitive behavior.

A stalwart of the left wing of the Greens in Parliament, she is also a shadow rapporteur on the EU’s common-charger plans — an area that has been subject to heavy industry lobbying in the past. Cavazzini has also held posts at the United Nations, working on the international organization’s sustainable-development goals, as well as at the German foreign ministry. She’s also well-established in Brussels, having come to the EU capital in 2009 to work as an adviser to co-president of the Greens, Ska Keller.

What to watch out for this year: As you would expect, the Greens are pushing for robust amendments to the European Commission’s common-charger proposal. Cavazzini will want to make sure that the bloc’s green ambitions go hand in hand with tech policy across files such as these.

What’s their superpower: Being a balanced yet authoritative voice for the Greens. Cavazzini has built a higher profile in Brussels for herself since becoming IMCO chair. Her powers of gentle persuasion are her forte.

Influence score: 20/30
