US secretary of state confirms plans to supply Ukraine with fighter jets via Poland

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed on Sunday that the U.S. is working with Warsaw on plans to supply Ukraine with Russian-made fighter jets.

“We are working with Poland as we speak to see if we can backfill anything that they provide to the Ukrainians,” Blinken told CNN in an interview.

Poland would donate MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, which its pilots are trained to fly, and in turn, Poland would receive U.S.-made F-16s. The Financial Times earlier on Sunday reported on negotiations to supply the planes.

Blinken also said the U.S. is documenting instances of attacks on civilians and the use of certain banned weapons that could constitute evidence in the International Criminal Court’s investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine stemming from Russia’s invasion.

“Right now we’re looking at these reports; they’re very credible, and we’re documenting everything,” Blinken said.

He added that the U.S. would support Ukrainian refugees and the countries that allow them entry, and look into welcoming them to the U.S.

“The U.S. is committed to doing anything we can to support countries which are bearing the immediate burden of taking Ukrainians, and then, if appropriate, if people seek refugee status in the U.S., we will look at that,” he said.
