UK treating 21 Ukrainian children with cancer

Twenty-one Ukrainian children with cancer are receiving treatment in the U.K. after Poland issued a call for support to care for refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of their country.

The children and their families landed in the U.K. on Sunday night and are currently undergoing assessments to best understand what treatment they need, the Department of Health said in a statement.

Around 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into Poland and hundreds of thousands have fled to other neighbouring countries including Moldova, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. Most are women, children and the elderly.

Many men have chosen to stay and fight for their country where, in the coastal city of Mariupol alone, city authorities say that 2,187 residents have been killed following the Russian invasion.

Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said he was “appalled by the atrocities” in Ukraine.

“I am proud that the U.K. is offering lifesaving medical care to these Ukrainian children, who have been forced out of their home country by the Russian invasion while undergoing medical treatment,” he said.

The U.K. joins EU countries in sending aid to the conflict zone. The government has sent seven aircraft to the region to deliver more than 650,000 medical items, including wound care packs, equipment for intensive care and vital medicines.

Ireland has also sent vital medical supplies, including blood bags, bio-protection suits, protective masks and disinfectant, while Sweden is assessing its medicines stockpiles such as antibiotics, to send to the crisis.
