Macron’s China-friendly candidate loses parliamentary seat

PARIS — Buon Tan, a lawmaker from Emmanuel Macron’s party La République en Marche, has lost his reelection bid in the French parliamentary election on Sunday.

Buon Tan drew attention earlier this year for being the only lawmaker in France’s National Assembly to have voted against a parliamentary resolution labeling China’s treatment of the Uyghur minority as a “genocide”, and for his alleged membership to organizations directly linked to China’s communist party.

In an interview with POLITICO, Buon Tan denied being a member of those organizations and called for resuming talks with Beijing on the EU-China investment deal, which was put on hold last year due to diplomatic tensions between Brussels and Beijing.

Sandrine Rousseau, a green candidate from the left-wing NUPES coalition, won the runoff against Buon Tan on Sunday with 58.05 percent of votes.
