France’s transport minister to join hydrogen carmaker

PARIS — Carmaker Hopium said Monday it will appoint French Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari to its board of directors.

Djebbari, a former airline pilot and a lawmaker with French President Emmanuel Macron’s LREM party, previously hinted that he would leave politics and join the private sector. He visited Hopium, a French manufacturer of hydrogen-powered sport cars, several times as minister.

Macron, following his reelection last month, is expected to announce a government reshuffle imminently.

Djebbari, who is well-known in France for his social media presence, has made no secret of his impatience to leave Macron’s government. In a recent TikTok video, the minister joked about the slow pace of the government reshuffle while surrounded by moving boxes in his office.

Djebbari’s appointment is set to by approved by Hopium’s shareholders on June 20.
