EU to ban exports of wines and diamonds to hit Russian elite

The EU is set to slam Moscow with a new raft of trade sanctions, including bans on the export of EU luxury goods.

The luxury goods targeted will include caviar, certain wines, cigars, leather suitcases, diamonds, some electronic goods, certain musical instruments and even equipment for billiards and bowling, among other goods, according to two EU diplomats. A third EU diplomat stressed that the list of luxury products is very broad.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday referred to the upcoming export ban on luxury goods “as a direct blow to the Russian elite.”

The ban on luxury products is part of larger package that is set to be approved by EU ambassadors Monday. The package also includes sanctions on more oligarchs, an import ban on certain iron and steel goods and a ban on European investments across Russia’s energy sector, as von der Leyen announced on Friday.
