Boris Johnson’s deputy stands in as UK leader recovers from surgery

LONDON — Boris Johnson’s deputy will take key decision as the U.K. prime minister recuperates after an operation on his sinuses, Downing Street has said.

The medical procedure, which Johnson’s spokesperson said had seen PM “very briefly” put under general anesthetic, took place at 6 a.m. Monday in a London hospital and was carried out by the National Health Service.

Johnson’s office described the procedure as a “very minor, routine operation related to his sinuses,” and said the U.K. leader was back in Downing Street after 10 a.m Monday.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab — who previously stepped in for Johnson when he was hospitalized with COVID-19 — will make any “significant decisions” while his boss recovers, the spokesperson said. Johnson is currently planning to chair a meeting of his Cabinet on Tuesday morning.
